Linking seed size and number to trait syndromes in trees

چکیده

Aim Our understanding of the mechanisms that maintain forest diversity under changing climate can benefit from knowledge about traits are closely linked to fitness. We tested whether link between and seed number size is consistent with two hypotheses, termed leaf economics spectrum plant syndrome, or reproduction represents an independent dimension related a size–seed trade-off. Location Most data come Europe, North Central America East Asia. A minority South America, Africa Australia. Time period 1960–2022. Major taxa studied Trees. Methods gathered 12 million observations seeds produced in 784 tree species. estimated by individual trees scaled it up species level. Next, we used principal components analysis generalized joint attribute modelling (GJAM) map on spectrum. Results Incorporating into trait while controlling for environment phylogeny GJAM exposes relationships might otherwise remain hidden. Production large total biomass [product size; hereafter, productivity (SSP)] associated high area, low foliar nitrogen, specific area (SLA) dense wood. numbers small nutrient-demanding softwood, leaves SLA. Trait covariation opposing strategies: one fast-growing, early successional, dispersal, other slow-growing, stress-tolerant, recruit shaded conditions. Main conclusions Earth system models currently assume reproductive allocation indifferent among functional types. Easily measurable strong predictor productivity. The connection SSP form first basis improved fecundity prediction across global forests.

Edge 2-rainbow domination number and annihilation number in trees

A edge 2-rainbow dominating function (E2RDF) of a graph G is a ‎function f from the edge set E(G) to the set of all subsets‎ ‎of the set {1,2} such that for any edge.......................

The Size-Ramsey Number of Trees

If G and H are graphs, let us write G → (H)2 if G contains a monochromatic copy ofH in any 2-colouring of the edges of G. The size-Ramsey number re(H) of a graph H is the smallest possible number of edges a graph G may have if G→ (H)2. Suppose T is a tree of order |T | ≥ 2, and let t0, t1 be the cardinalities of the vertex classes of T as a bipartite graph, and let ∆(T ) be the maximal degree o...

The size-Ramsey number of trees

Given a graph G, the size-Ramsey number r̂(G) is the minimum number m for which there exists a graph F on m edges such that any two-coloring of the edges of F admits a monochromatic copy of G. In 1983, J. Beck introduced an invariant β(·) for trees and showed that r̂(T ) = Ω(β(T )). Moreover he conjectured that r̂(T ) = Θ(β(T )). We settle this conjecture by providing a family of graphs and an emb...

Seed size, seedling morphology, and response to deep shade and damage in neotropical rain forest trees.

To investigate the existence of coordinated sets of seedling traits adapted to contrasting establishment conditions, we examined evolutionary convergence in seedling traits for 299 French Guianan woody plant species and the stress response in a shadehouse of species representing seed size gradients within five major cotyledon morphology types. The French Guianan woody plant community has larger...

The effect of twig architecture and seed number on seed size variation in subtropical woody species.

This study aims to determine the effect of twig (current year shoot) size on seed size variation and to test whether a seed size vs number tradeoff occurs for the twigs of subtropical broad-leaved species. Fruit-bearing twigs were sampled for 55 woody species (including 33 evergreen and 22 deciduous dicot species) from a southwest Chinese forest. Twig size, fruit size and number, and seed size ...
